Interesting to see what buyers choose . . .

When someone buys two or more of my pictures, I enjoy seeing how the combination looks together.

For all I know, each of these pictures hangs in a different room, but the link between all three is obviously a southwestern or Native American vibe, especially since the buyer lives in Idaho.

The first combines images I shot in New Mexico, called "And the Rains Came." Here's a link to the original and its description: https://fineartamerica.com/featured/and-the-rains-came-carol-leigh.html

"Signpost Up Ahead" is the title of the second picture, also a photomontage that contains a pattern from the side of a fishing boat, various painted papers, and painted circles. Here's a link to the original: https://fineartamerica.com/featured/signpost-up-ahead-carol-leigh.html

And the third picture, "Santa Fe Windows," is yet another photomontage, with the windows coming from a photo I took in Santa Fe, as well as bits of architectural detail I found walking around the town. Here's the link to the original: https://fineartamerica.com/featured/santa-fe-windows-carol-leigh.html

Three photos to one buyer, each dramatically different, yet the same sort of "feeling" in all three.

Recently added to Fine Art America: "Fishing Vessel "Vivian"

This is a composite of the fishing vessel "Vivian," in Astoria, along with a number of other images also taken in Astoria -- one of my favorite photo locations.

I offer two versions -- a full-frame image and a square version -- so that buyers have a choice. Frankly, in this case, I prefer the top picture because the "3M" at the top isn't cropped, nor is the word "Astoria" at the bottom.

Either way, I'm fond of the complementary blue and orange colors, the overall grungy and weathered look, and the subtlety of ropes and masts in the background.

Most recent upload to Fine Art America / Pixels

Quite often, when I offer a picture on Fine Art America / Pixels, if I think it'll work well as a square, I'll include that version, too.

Sometimes I don't know which format a potential buyer might like better, so I offer two choices. Ha! But maybe that makes choosing even more confusing!

These two images were recently added to my "train gallery" here: https://carol-leigh.pixels.com/collections/train+art

This photo was taken at Portola Railroad Museum in California -- one of my favorite places.

"Four Hearts"

A buyer from North Carolina purchased this picture via Fine Art America and requested it be printed on metal (which created a handsome look) and it was big — 48” on the long side. Now that’s impressive!

I made each one of the square sheets of paper as well as each of the four hearts using watercolor paint and thin paper.

It was a challenge to make, but worth it, since I really like the results. And I hope the person in North Carolina continues to enjoy it daily.

My first sale with Fine Art America . . .

This is the first picture I sold at Fine Art America, back in 2012. It's a mixed-media piece, a combination of various old Japanese papers, called "Red Sun."

I didn't know if it would sell, since it's rather different. But being different has made all the difference. This is the type of image I enjoy creating, that makes me feel I'm an "artist," something that photography only occasionally gave me.

So I continue to create what I love, upload it to FAA, and go on to the next. Although a lot of my "straight" photographs do sell, it's mostly my mixed-media collages and photomontages that people are attracted to. And hooray for that!

SOLD: Three "postal art" pictures . . .

I make a lot of postal-oriented pictures. Some are physical collages, others are physical collages that I’ve brought into the computer and tweaked a bit, and some are photomontages done entirely in the computer using my own photos, my collections of stamps, postal ephemera, and more.

I love making these pictures, but I realize they’re not appealing to everyone. I offer them at Fine Art America / Pixels because I like them, and maybe there are some kindred spirits out there who will find them appealing, too.

So when I saw these three come up as having sold the beginning of the year, I was pleasantly surprised. They are matted and framed exactly as the buyer wished (well, except for the bottom one). They make a good-looking combination, don’t you think?

Cote d’Ivoire
This is a print of a physical collage I made using hand-painted papers, handmade papers, Japanese rice paper, and two different vintage postage stamps. Here’s a link to the picture at Fine Art America: https://fineartamerica.com/featured/cote-divoire-carol-leigh.html

Nikkou Sunshine
This is a print of a physical collage I made using a spring-like Japanese stamp, handmade paper, and a monoprint on Japanese rice paper. Here’s a link to the picture at Fine Art America: https://fineartamerica.com/featured/nikkou-sunshine-carol-leigh.html

San Francisco 1952 Air Mail (Square Version)
Minimalistic photomontage incorporating photos of a postage stamp, the side of a truck, a rubber-stamped number, and more. I also created an elongated rectangular version of this image. Here’s a link to the picture at Fine Art America: https://fineartamerica.com/featured/san-francisco-1952-air-mail-square-carol-leigh.html

(In the sale announcement that FAA sent me, apparently this photo was corrupted, and doesn't appear the same way the previous two do. Pixel mysteries . . .)

Turtle Mosaic . . .

Although I’m known for my photomontage/collage work, I take a lot of “regular” pictures as well.

I was pleased to see that my photo of a mosaic turtle, taken in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, sold earlier this year. And here you see it as the customer ordered it -- matted and framed. It would probably look equally good as a metal print. Or even as a tote bag.

Most recent work: "Candle Flame Pastel"

Inspired by a Chzechoslovakian matchbox label, I transformed the concept of "be careful with fire" into a more simplified, abstract image that has a pastel/chalklike vibe.

I just uploaded it this morning.

Pages in progress . . .

This project may take me forever to finish! It's something I work on when not working on other things, so its progression is quite slow.

These are pages for a series of three Japanese-style, ledger-style books. I laid them out on the floor in the office this morning where temporary sunlight enabled me to simply stand over them and shoot straight down.

Gotta say, it's rather cool to see them all spread out like this. And now, back to the studio...

Latest work: "Heart Collage 653"

I’m making a series of heart collages that I turn into notecards or postcards to send to friends. The components aren’t really planned, just whatever scraps I find on my art table at the time. It’s fun, easy, and makes me feel good!

This one consists of a piece of brush-cleaning paper, a torn scrap of silver-painted paper, and a heart cut from a gelatin print I’d made.

The original card was sent off to a friend yesterday, but before it left, I brought it into the computer to be able to offer it for sale at Fine Art America / Pixels. Here’s the link: https://fineartamerica.com/featured/1-heart-collage-653-carol-leigh.html

Blue Enso on Plaster

Just finished the other day . . .

A blue Enso circle seemingly floats above a horizon line of warm red, yellow, and orange. I like the comforting colors, the complementary blue/orange combination, and the overall texture.

You can see this picture larger and in more detail in my "Circles" gallery at https://carol-leigh.pixels.com/featured/blue-enso-on-plaster-carol-leigh.html

Pleasantly surprised . . .

Most of my work sells as prints (framed or un-framed, printed on metal, more popularly as canvas wraps, etc.), so when I saw these two pictures that sold as tote bags, I did a double-take. They look great as totes! Not every picture works on a tote bag, and if I think it won’t, I don’t offer it. But these do!

I’ve purchased tote bags from Fine Art America for myself and to give as presents. The bags are well made, the fabric feels and looks like canvas, and the artwork appears on both sides of the bag. I’m proud to give them as gifts.

Recent work . . . "Page 0419"

I am creating handmade Japanese ledger-style (daifuku) books, each page being a collage of old Japanese book pages, my own handmade papers, handmade prints, paint, and numerous other items.

I particularly liked how this page looked as a standalone image, and so brought it into the computer to make a digital print. This way I have the best of both worlds: cutting and pasting and painting in the studio, and then the computer processes afterwards, doing little tweakings here and there.
